I have just completed my second Iron Butt and have not gotten the accolades that I was expecting.  In fact, I have gotten more derision and criticism for my act of irresponsibility.

The basic premises is that on a 1,000 mile ride, (not to mention the insane 1,500 mile in 24 ride) that you get tired and are a menace to yourself and others on the road.  Lots of miles couple with night riding and impaired senses or tiredness leads to accidents.  \

What say you?   I never felt tired and was in control in my opinion.  Of course I have not done a BBG yet but desperately want to do one.  Is this irresponsible?

Your opinion and analysis of your accomplishment is the only one that matters.

Welcome to the reality of what we do.  That type of response is from those who don't understand.  It's also the reason most of us don't talk about endurance riding to "normal" people.  Don't worry about it, be glad they know their limitations.

I would work up to a Bun BUrner 1500/36 hours as your next ride.

And perhaps a good follow up would be to do a 2K...2000 miles in 48 hours. That will give you a good idea of your fatigue with 6 hours of rest in between rides.

I wouldnt try a Bun Burner Gold at this moment.

It only becomes irresponsible if you don't call it quits when you've reached your limits. JMO

Plan and do your ride like it's a BBG1500. If you get tired. STOP!
Even if you have to stop for awhile you will still be able to do a BB1500.

I agree with sadlsor; most people dont understand so I dont talk about it unless asked.

There is also a misunderstanding about what a SS or BB actually is. I overheard a sportbiker explaining to his buddy that it was a mini Cannonball run. It seems some people think it is about speed.

I completed a SS3K this summer from Washington to Connecticut.  My family knew when I left, and "about" when I arrived.  My brother was convinced that I must have sped the whole way there.

After I got back home I did the math with him and my mother present.  65 mph x 17 hours of travel = 1105 miles travelled x 3 days = 3K plus a margin.

I didn't even bother to try and explain that in addition to the riding I was documenting it hoping to get a certificate.  They already think I'm certifiable.

I did admit to using picnic benches at rest stops on nights 1 and 3, and a motel room for a shower and 5/6 hours sleep on night 2.

And on night 3 I did end up pushing harder than I should have.... I realized my path of travel was starting to wander and made the next rest stop.

I think the deal about "If you have to ask you wouldn't understand" applies.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the "accolades" to come.  There just aren't may people, riders and non-riders alike, who care much about ld riding.

Also, don't worry about the naysayer bikers out there who can't ride past more than one bar.  Those posers certainly aren't safety experts!

Take the above comments to heart; it's the best advice you're going to get anywhere.
