Question on Witnesses.

I am planning a SS2K ride and plan to pick up a BB along
the way. Actually, the plan is a SSG2K and a BBG, but we
have a fall back if we miss the BBG and can turn it into
a BB/SSG2K or BB/SS2K.

Anyway, the question is ... at the 1500 mile mark, do I
need a witness (or two for the BBG) at that point, or is
the receipt enough and the witnesses at the very end of
the 2k ride acceptable?

Thanks

Dan

I recently completed a BBG and a SS2000 Gold on my way back to Michigan from the IBA party in Jacksonville.

Two witnesses at the start and two at the end of the total 2000.  I then submitted the receipts for the first 1500 miles and an application for the BBG along with a copy of the 2 witnesses for start and finish.  Then I submitted the receipts for the entire 2000 miles and an application for the SS2000 Gold and a copy of the 2 witnesses for start and finish.  I put both applications in the same envelope and sent them in.

I received my package a couple of weeks later.

Question for Ira....

Is one local police officer witness the end of a ride sufficient to satisfy a two civilian witness rule requirement?

I recently completed a BBG around 2:30 am in a little town on I-10 in Texas.  The lone clerk at the gas station didn't want to leave the store to inspect my odometer and plate number.  A police officer arrived and after I explained what I needed was more than happy to inspect my DL, license plate, odometer and accurate time I completed the ride.  He personally filled out my end of ride witness form.  He provided his badge number and gave me one of his Crockett County Sheriff's Office cards.

I waited around another 20 minutes in hopes some other local resident would show.  But, no one did so I rode to a rest stop to catch a few zz's before riding another couple hundred miles home to Wimberley.

As I've mentioned multiple times, you don't need to have your end witness at the end gas station.  Obtain your gas receipt to establish your official end time and location (as you established your official start time and location with a receipt at the stating gas station).  If it's the middle of the night, you can wait until the morning to obtain the signature(s).  It should just be within a reasonable distance from your last receipt.  Similarly, if you start your ride at o-dark-thirty, you can obtain your starting witness the evening before.

With regard to the original questions, a computer-generated receipt at the 1,500-mile point is what is required.  As in the discussion above, the idea is that you can obtain your witness signatures "off the clock", before your start and after your finish.  If you are planning on applying for multiple certificates on the same ride, you only need a finish witness at the end of the last ride - we don't want you to waste time looking for witnesses if you're on the clock.  Just pick up receipts at the end points of the rides within the big ride.

We will accept one badged LEO signature in lieu of two regular witnesses, but we much prefer you obtain two witnesses.  And considering you can obtain them off the clock, there is normally no reason not to obtain them.

Thanks Ira,

I should have known/remembered that.
