Iron Butt Association Annual Memorial 1000 Ride
Each year the lives of many of our fellow motorcycle riders and loved ones are cut short. In their memory, a group of the World’s Toughest Riders will participate in a Saddle Sore 1000 on one of three weekends, September 22-23, September 29-30, or October 6-7. We hope to have riders participating in all 50 states, in all of the Canadian provinces, and in several countries around the world. Thess dates were selected because the weather across the world is generally good—not too hot and not too cold.
The IBA will issue a special certificate for this event.
To specially honor our fallen brethren, we’re asking each you to find one of your motorcycle friends who is not an IBA member to ride the Saddle Sore with you. This will give you the opportunity to mentor the ‘newbie’ in the skill of route planning, navigation, hydration, and ATGATT before and during the ride. If the two of you ride the same route and submit your documentation together, special pricing will apply for the certification—there will be a $10 reduction for each of you in the normal fee!
The person for whom you’re riding does not have to be a former IBA member, or even a former motorcycle rider. It can be anybody that is special to you; somebody that has had an impact on your life.
What better way to honor our departed friends than to bring new members into the sport we all love. This will be a fun event! IBA will issue special certificates for the mentor and the mentee, and a special patch for the event. A video of the event will be produced. A special website will list all the participants and for whom they’re riding. We’re working on other ideas to make this event special.
So reserve one of the Memorial Ride weekends now. Recruit a mentee.
Let’s ‘ride the Memorial.’
Send me an email signing up for the ride, with the name of the special person you’re honoring, and a short paragraph of who they were and why you’re riding for them.

Howard,
I would like to ride in this event. I know you know that already since we have been speaking about this for quite some time. So there was no real need for me to post anything here except I like to see my picture pop up on the computer screen every now and then.
Looking foreward to another great ride. If anyone in the North Texas area is considering joining the IBA, this is a great time to step up. I would be happy to offer my considerable mentoring skills to anyone in need!

Clarification
This year's event does NOT require an in-state ride. Any
SS1000 will work.
Also, mentoring a newbie is NOT a requirement. However, as
we get more people into our sport, there will be fewer
people who think that we're crazy.

This is a great concept. My wife has shown interest in doing a SS1k on her 500 Ninja (she has done 500-600 mile days already) so this would be the perfect opportunity. We would be doing it for Curt Gran, although I have unofficially done two SS1ks for him- one going out to his funeral and one yesterday for a charity Waffle House run in his memory. This would take care of NH as we would be starting and stopping the ride from here.

Howard shalom,
In Israel Sunday is a working day. Our weekend is Fri-Sat.
Would you consider letting us doing the ride on the same weekend, but September 28-29?
This is a rare opportunity for us to take part in an IBA event - despite being half way around the globe.
Thanks,
Amnon

Hey Amnon,
The thought behind the ride is more important than the exactness of the dates. So come on and do the on Friday.
Let me know. You'll be the first international member to sign up!
Be safe.
Howard

Howard,
E- mail sent. Sounds like a great way to remember friends lost. I am
just a "Rookie" to the IBA myself,..but have followed the IBA rides for
years and know several other IBA riders. I also will be riding in memory
of Curt Gran...

Is there anybody willing to mentor a newbie around Austin, TX? Or around Hays, KS?

Howard,
I can mentor the Austin rider. I live 30 miles south of Austin.
