Here is a little deal my brother wrote about a ride we did
Back in June of 05
23 counties of WY. and 6 surounding states. I complested a SS and BB on this ride...Thought you all mite like to see it.
6 States 23 Counties 2 Days
Well it all began on Sat June 25th 2005 at 6:00am when we left Gillette. We
is: me- Jim Backer and my brother Doug from South Dakota.(2 others
showed interest but for one reason or another could not make it.) We
headed east on I 90 to Moorcroft then on to Newcastle and over to
Custer, SD. We continued on to Edgemont and the back into WY and on to Lusk.
We fueled in Lusk and headed out for Orin Jct.where we got
on the interstate south to the Guernsey exit. On to Torrington and
into Nebraska and Scottsbluff, south to Kimball, where we fueled for
the second time. We jumped on the interstate and headed for
Laramie, where we went through Snowy Range and into CO. and
back north through Saratoga and back on the interstate for a short
jump to Rawlins, Muddy Gap and exit stage left towards Lander. Just
a few miles from lander we again took a quick left and headed for
the 3rd gas stop of the day at Farson. WOW did the wind blow across
there. After gas and a much needed blader draining we were off for
Rock Springs and Green River where we once again had a short stint
on the interstate to Hwt 530 south and on to Utah and the first rain
of the trip. It drizzled for about 20 miles and then rained pretty
hard for the next 10 miles. and then wet roads on into Evanston.
Somewhere near Mountain View we completed the 1000 in 24 that Doug was
certifying for the Iron Butt. It was 10:05 PM and the search for a
motel and gas began, and what a search it was as the motels in the
whole area were full due to activities in Evanston. Finally we
found one room in Evanston at midnight. 1049 miles into the trip.
It was a short night but we woke refreshed and on the road for
points beyond. The 4th gas stop took place during the search for a
motel. The weather looked great and Kemmerer was soon behind us and
Jackson was getting closer. Then a quick left in Jackson and on to
Idaho. Just across the Idaho line was the 1st gas stop for the
day and a quick bite, and we were off for the next big destination.
We were looking forward to a nice leisure ride to West Yellowstone
and the 6th state and the on through the park. Idaho had some
nice rolling hills and West Yellowstone is just 12 miles ahead.
BANG a deer ran between the 2 cars, we met and he ran into the front
left of my bike, 1380 miles into the trip. Almost an hour later and
the law had left and the bike was deemed ready to go on, and into
the park we went. The 45 minute wait for the law
helped me get my nerves settled and the bike checked out. The
traffic was heavy in the park but it is about the only was to get to
Cody without going way out of the way. It never ceases to amaze me
how cars just stop in the middle of the road for pictures of almost
anything you can imagine. Well on with the ride and off the saop
box. We headed north towards Cooke City and Chief Joseph
Hwy. 7 miles out of Cooke City Doug had completed his second
Iron Butt, 1500 in 36. Fuel is ahead in Cody and it is just about
300 miles to Gillette and the 6-23-2 is complete. Just past
Ten sleep it got dark and the deer were everywere. As you can
imagine they made me more then a little nervous, and by the time I
got to Buffalo I had been so tense for so long that my arms hurt
from the shoulders down. But the dentist was expecting me to be in
Casper at 8:00 AM Monday morning so the trek continues. Ucross. Lieter
Spotted Horse and finally the lights are on the horizon for
Gillette. It is now 11:45 Sunday Night 1849 miles and the 6-23 in 2 has been
completed, and other then some damage to the bike and my nerves a
little shook. WHAT a great trip. As my brother was leaving for South Dakota
Monday morning and I was headed for the dentist in Casper He was
asking what date it will be run next year. ANY TAKERS?
