Oldest Rider to complete the Iron Butt Rally:
In 1993, 69 years old Garve Nelson beat his own record (he was 67 years old
in when he finished the 1991 rally. At 71 years old, Garve Nelson also
finished the 1995 Iron Butt Rally but was disqualified for lending another
rider his identification towel.

Iron Butt Firsts:
In 2001, Leonard Aron finished the Iron Butt Rally on a 1946 Indian Chief
to become the oldest motorcycle to finish the event.
In 1999, Bob Mutchler, who was stricken with Polio as a child and
spent three years in an iron lung, became the first person to overcome
the challenge of not being able to walk without assistance to complete
the rally.
In 1999, Caroline and Michael McDaniel got married on the way to the
rally and honeymooned by riding the Iron Butt!
In 1997, Martin Hildebrandt rode a 1973 Zundapp to become the first
person to finish on a two stroke.
In 1997, Phyliss and Fritz Lang became the first husband-wife couple
to finish the rally riding their own motorcycles (Fritz was on a
BMW and Phyliss was on a Harley-Davidson).
In 1995, Ronald and Karen McAteer became the first two-up couple to
finish the Iron Butt Rally.
In 1995, Martin Hildebrandt from Germany became the first rider to
stop in all 48 continential United States during the rally. We often
joked that Martin was trying to squeeze in seeing all of America
in one very short vacation!
In 1993, Doug Packard finished the Iron Butt on a Kawasaki KLR 650
dual-sport motorcycle to become the first single cylinder motorcycle
to complete the Iron Butt Rally.
In 1987, Paul Persinger (Yamaha Venture) and Paul Persinger Junior
(Kawasaki Concours) became the first father-son team to finish an
Iron Butt Rally.
